ARE YOU BREATHING FIBERGLASS?

Most ductwork is either fully or partially constructed with 1 1/2 inch fiberglass ductboard. During the manufacturing process the fiberglass particles are compressed and then treated with a resin to hold the microscopic particles. After years (8-10) of withstanding hot/cold extremes in your attic, the resin deteriorates and fiberglass particles are released into your home everytime your AC system turns on. Try this test -- wipe your finger over a peice of furniture under a vent and go outside and look at it in the sun. If the "dust" has a yellowish color and has some sparkles to it the probability is that it is fiberglass.

Are Your Leaky Ducts Making You Sick?

YES. The Oregon Office of Energy and the Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance state that leaky ductwork can because they draw pollutants into the home and the air you breathe from crawl spaces and other building cavities. These pollutants include fiberglass, dust, and mold; all of which irritate the respiratory system, They can also create a negative pressure in your home and draw combustion gases into your home from fireplaces and wood stoves, and garages.

Is Your AC / Heating System Constantly Running?

IT PROBABLY NEEDS TO if your heating or cooling your attic. And that means no matter how long you run your system or even how powerful of a heating and air conditioning unit you own -- you may not be getting all the air you need to feel good.

House too hot and stuffy?

The problem may be the ducts, not the air conditioner. "Summer is heating up and homeowners can lose an average of 20 percent of their cooling through leaks in the ductwork during peak cooling periods. Sealing that deficient ductwork can increase the overall efficiency of the air conditioning system and reduce cooling costs by 20 percent or more. The average home, whether it's new or old, can lose up to half of its heating or cooling capacity through cracked and leaking ductwork." (Sacramento Municipal Utility District - June 2003)

Why Don’t You Do Something About It?

Since so many air duct systems leak and pull bad air in (we find 20 to 40% leakage in 3 out of 4 homes we visit), poor air quality is a problem that many homes have. Leaky ductwork often means that some rooms or even entire floors of you home will be uncomfortable. And that means no matter how long you run your system or even how powerful of a heating and air conditioning unit you own -- you may not be getting all the air you need to feel good. You don’t need to heat and cool the great outdoors. Call us for an estimate. Chances are the cost to repair it will be paid back in one year in the utility bill savings. And you’ll breathe a lot easier.
